I do love this time of year, glad to leave hot weather behind. A perfect day has bright blue skies, a cool morning and evening, and a warm afternoon, all fringed with the rich, turning colours of autumn.
Of course this palette of gold and rust and red which gives such glory to the trees, is evidence of decay, is a display followed by the fall of the leaves, the natural return of winter. We may revel in our favourite time of the year, and enjoy it coming around again, yet there is a reminder of our passing lives with this, even alongside that of the faithfulness of God, in the seasons. We may feel that death itself is part of the natural order, but the Bible shows that it came about as a result of the separation of man from God. That is why we have the need to consider our mortality, and our need of him. How grateful we can be, whether the changes of the year are welcome, or the changes in our lives and in our world are threatening, that a great future is promised us, and is ours for trust in Jesus. We have ‘a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, ‘and an ‘inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled and unfading,’ 1 Peter 1 v3, 4. So that’s it until next year.
